Description: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease and pain is the principal clinical sign. In advanced OA, there are cellular changes that perpetuate the pain response to mechanical, electrical and biochemical stimulus. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) do not always provide sufficient pain relief in dogs with OA. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsive drug, which has shown effectively in relief several pain conditions. Fluoxetine is an antidepressant drug and seems to have efficacy in several chronic pain conditions. The objective was to measure the osteoarthritic pain, before and after of the medication with gabapentin and fluoxetine alone or in addition to Carprofen therapy and to compare groups to the final treatment. A total of 30 dogs were included and were randomly divided in 5 groups (n=6) and then were medicated for 8 weeks. Numerical Rating Scale and Helsinki Chronic Pain Index (HCPI) were used to assessment the osteoarthritic pain. For Numerical Rating Scale used for the Clinical Researcher observed significant difference in all treatment groups in week 4 and 8 except to group 5, which shown mild improvement in comparison to basal measurement. Owners used HCPI and observed physical activity increased significant in all groups since week 3 and group 3 since week 2 of treatment in comparison to basal measurement. In conclusion, Gabapentin alone, Gabapentin+Carprofen and Gabapentin+Fluoxetin relief OA pain and increased the physical activity significant in dogs with OA pain.
