PROPUESTA DE TRADUCCIÓN DE LOS DIÁLOGOS DE LA NOVELA. WITH HOPE, FAREWELL (1952) DE ALEXANDER BARON: UN CASO DE TRADUCCIÓN DE LA VARIEDAD LINGÜÍSTICA COCKNEY

Abstract

This research aims to render the Cockney dialect in some dialogues of Alexander Baron’s novel With Hope, Farewell into Spanish. Since the dialect reflects the social and cultural identity of some characters, as well as their personalities and emotions, this study focuses on the translation of dialectal elements such as phonological, lexical, and idiomatic features of Cockney. Considering that translating a language variety poses serious problems for translators, tasked with conveying social, cultural, and historical elements, it is important to follow translation strategies that enable the transfer of such information from one language into another. Extensive reading on the translation of literary dialects was of the essence to reproduce the effect of Cockney and fulfill its function in the novel as well as reflect the character's social and cultural identity. As a result, a fictitious dialect was created, following different authors’ translation strategies.
